5 easy ways to track your budget

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

Create a spreadsheet

The simplest way of tracking your finances is to record each transaction in a spreadsheet. You can even record your purchase on your phone so there is no way that you can't do it and with this you are able to know exactly where every dollar came from and went. At the end of each period (week or month), It gives you a clearer picture of how you're spending money.

Use an online tracking tool or app

With so many online tools and apps, why not skip the templates and spreadsheets altogether and let an app do the heavy lifting? These types of apps will work if you’re willing to log your purchases, put in the time and stick to your budget.

Utilize different bank accounts

Depending on your financial goals, you may find that it makes sense to have more than one bank account. Having multiple bank accounts can make it possible for you to have consistent access to the cash you need or make it easier to save with an online high yield savings account.

Envelope System

This is a new one for me I really never heard of this method but its explained as a way to track exactly how much money you have in each expense category for the month by keeping your cash tucked away in envelopes. Take a few envelopes, write a specific expense category on each one — like rent, cell phone bill and/or groceries — and then put the money you plan to spend on those things into the envelopes the end of the month, you can see how much cash is left by taking a quick look in your envelope.

Hold Yourself Accountable

One of the best things about tracking your expenses is being able to hold yourself accountable. When you set goals and spending limits, make sure you’re meeting them when you track your expenses each week or month.
